Operation and cleaning of a woodstove

Contents

First, place an ignition pellet in the centre of the stove and around it, wood chips (preferably pine) so that there is space between them for the air to enter and the wood to burn.

Then, we will light the tablet, and when the wood chips have ignited, we will add the logs.

It is advisable to use firewood cut in sections to light the stove because the heartwood burns better and the bark burns worse. Whole logs can be used for refuelling. Any type of wood is suitable for stove operation, although the use of resinous wood (pine, eucalyptus, etc.) is not recommended. The humidity must be taken into account, as if it is too wet or green it can cause problems in the operation of the appliance due to its high water content.

The smoke outlet of the stove must be opened as far as possible so that the wood burns completely. Then regulate the air intake to stabilise the fire.

By closing the air intake to the minimum, the fire will be extinguished. If, on the other hand, we want the flame to gain strength, we should open the flue gradually.

The door of the cooker should only be opened when there are embers left, as the smoke tends to escape by the shortest route, and would go out into the room instead of through the flue. As soon as there are embers, we will proceed to the reloading.

To reload, spread out the embers and refill the appliance with wood. Open the flue to the maximum and repeat the cycle.

During the first few ignitions it is normal for smoke to be produced. This is due to the fact that certain components of the anti-heat paint are burnt at the same time as the pigment adheres to the stove itself. For this reason, during the first ignitions, it is recommended to ventilate the room abundantly until these fumes/odours disappear.

How to clean a woodstove?

We will clean the stove when it is completely switched off to avoid burns.

Our appliances have a drawer that collects the embers and ashes generated during combustion. To clean it, pour its contents into a metal container (do not use a plastic or wooden container because the ashes may be at high temperatures) and put it back in its position. This operation should be carried out frequently to prevent too much ash from accumulating in the drawer and causing the cast iron grill to overheat.

To maintain the glass, a cotton cloth and glass cleaner can be used to remove any dust or soot. Do not use water.
